HULL roller derby league looking for new venue
May 30th 2011
A GROWING roller derby league in Hull is looking for a permanent training venue in the city.
The Hull’s Angels Roller Dames currently practise at the Bonus Arena while regular venue St Mary’s College use their sports hall for exams. However, this temporary arrangement ends in July and the league needs a more suitable venue as its members look towards completing their minimum skills, a requirement for competition entry.

Roller girl, Betty Banzai, said: “St Mary’s have been fantastic hosts but we need somewhere a bit bigger and Bonus, while a great venue, prioritise football so we can’t always be sure of having somewhere to skate. “We’re on the verge of getting insurance for the league and our girls are committed to improving themselves and developing this exciting new sport in and around the city. Any help would be much appreciated.”

The league are looking for an indoor venue with a hard floor which is at least 100ft by 65ft (30m by 20m) for training sessions two evenings per week. Hull’s Angels started last September and there are now about twenty five members, many of whom are aiming to pass the minimum skills test before the league’s first birthday. Once this milestone has been achieved the Angels will be allowed to hold bouts as well as bring other teams to the city for competitive fixtures.

The sport, which originates in America, is noted for its speed and physicality, with teams skating around a flat oval track as attacking ‘jammers’ try to score points by lapping defensive ‘blockers’. A suitable venue is therefore vital.
